in case anyone was interested as to what spices I lost yesterday while practicing my new mothering techniques of allowing my children to spend time on their own ~

I am reading this very inspiring book by Donald Miller called A Million Miles in a Thousand Years.  I have not completed it yet, so I can’t give a full review on it.  What I can say though is that his raw style of writing is thoroughly enjoyable to me, and I find myself wanting to hide in the bathtub – I don’t need any water, just no children – in order to finish it.

After yesterday’s ordeal with my children, I remembered a wonderful paragraph I had read, and I have since gone back to it again.  I would like to share it with you.

“If you watched a movie about a guy who wanted a Volvo and worked for years to get it, you wouldn’t cry at the end when he drove off the lot, testing the windshield wipers.  You wouldn’t tell your friends you saw a beautiful movie or go home and put a record on to think about the story you’d seen.  The truth is, you wouldn’t remember that movie a week later, except you’d feel robbed and want your money back.  Nobody cries at the end of the movie about a guy who wants a Volvo.

But we spend years actually living those stories, and expect our live to fell meaningful.  The truth is, if what we choose to do with our lives won’t make a story meaningful, it won’t make a life meaningful either.”

The truth is, I went to bed, yesterday, with the good intentions of waking up and living a meaningful story – a story full of all those things I knew I wanted yesterday – love, laughter, trust.  I was going to wake up and be committed to what I was doing (not go back to bed wishing I was somewhere else.)   When I woke up this morning, though, this is what I saw when I looked out our kitchen window:

I remembered though, that I wanted to be committed to at least not hiding under my blankets and living a more interesting story, so I got up to look through some pictures that might encourage me that life was warm and fuzzy somewhere.  I soon came across some recent pictures I took of a graduating senior.  The deep blue color of her eyes reminded me of the ocean that I had been dreaming about, and so I wanted to share them with you – as I way to warm up your day.  Here, you go, enjoy the sneak peak of your great senior pictures, while I go play with my kids.
